Summer brings longer days, family adventures, and plenty of opportunities for fun. While children deserve time to relax and play, maintaining some structure and learning opportunities can help them continue developing important skills and make the transition back to school much smoother.
1. Maintain a Flexible Routine
Children thrive when they know what to expect. Summer schedules don’t need to be rigid, but keeping consistent wake-up times, mealtimes, and bedtimes can provide a sense of security and stability. Keeping a routine during the summer will also lead to a smoother transition back into school come fall.
2. Make Learning Part of Everyday Activities
Learning doesn’t have to look like a classroom. Reading together, cooking, gardening, counting objects, and exploring nature all help build language, math, science, and problem-solving skills.
3. Prioritize Play
Play is one of the most powerful ways young children learn. Through imaginative play, building activities, outdoor exploration, and games, children develop creativity, communication skills, and confidence.
4. Encourage Reading Every Day
Even 15–20 minutes of reading each day can make a significant difference. Visit the local library, create a cozy reading space at home, or let children choose books that match their interests.
5. Get Outside and Explore
Summer is the perfect time for nature walks, scavenger hunts, gardening, and outdoor play. These experiences support physical development while encouraging curiosity about the world around them.
6. Create Opportunities for Social Interaction
Whether through camps, playdates, family gatherings, or childcare programs, children benefit from practicing communication, cooperation, and friendship skills throughout the summer.
At Church Childcare Center, we believe learning happens everywhere including during the summer months. Through hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, creative play, and meaningful relationships, we’re committed to helping children continue growing all year long.
